Public bug reported:

Ever Since I updated this morning, an red warning symbol has appeared in
my system tray intermittently, telling me that I need to check for
updates because of a problem. When I do attempt the check, I get the
following message :

Failed to download repository information.
Check your internet connection.

W:Failed to fetch
http://ppa.launchpad.net/elementaryart/elementarydesktop/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/source/Sources

  404 Not Found
, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones
used instead.

The red symbol has come and gone throughout the day, but the update
check has continued to fail. I have changed nothing manually, and should
add that my internet connection has been absolutely fine. I noticed when
I visited one of the missing repositories in my browser that older
versions of the repository , from oneric and back, were there but
"precise" was missing.
