The problem might have been caused by my first NTFS partition that must have been corrupted. While trying to resize it, GPARTED failed. I deleted that partition and created 2 new NTFS partitions instead. The first one is 100MB, the second one becomes the old, formerly corrupted partition. grub-install /dev/sda works fine now :-)
