Public bug reported: Using up-to-date Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, either recommended or post-updates drivers, the external HDMI display (HD TV) is detected and shown as connected in xrandr and the Nvidia Settings utility, yet there is no signal and the screen remains black.
I opened another bug for the same issue with nouveau drivers, bug #1073185.
