I have also tried fglrx-installer and the latest AMD Catalyst drivers from the AMD website (12.9, 12.10, 12.11beta), neither of which worked any better, while all produced the same result. I had also tried the PPA from Nick Andrikos (https://launchpad.net/~andrikos/+archive/ppa/+packages?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=quantal) and that also produced a low graphics mode non-Unity loading environment. My laptop is a Samsung Chronos 7 700z3a-S03-DE with a intel hd3000 integrated and Radeon HD6490M discrete graphics card. Also possibly of note is the fact that the same laptop worked very well with Ubuntu 12.04 and its AMD Catalyst 12.6 drivers in the repositories.
