Seems like the Lucid ethernet driver for your hardware is not working
out.

Since the ethernet driver does not seem to work in Lucid, it would be
helpful if we could find a release where both the ethernet works, and
your computer does not have the blank screen problem. Could you please
test for this in Precise via http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/ ?
