After I attempted to fix the problem with multiple installs of the packages 
suggested, I made a symlinks in /usr/local/bin/.  I should hope that making a 
symlink in /usr/local/bin/ would not demolish the /etc/alternatives/ ecosystem.

Upgraded to 12.10 since this bug was filed.  I had four alternatives for 
'/usr/bin/jar' after upgrading to 12.10.
Wiped them all out, removed the /usr/local/bin/ symlink.  Reinstalled package 
'openjdk-7-jdk' and dependencies (not recommendations nor suggestions).

$ update-alternatives --list jar
/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/bin/jar

Please mark this issue as obsolete/ already fixed.
