It does sound similar, although I've never had the "An error occured while loading the authentication page" issue mentioned there, for me the intitial account setup always works fine, its just that at random empathy decides to take a working account and say it needs authorization until I delete and re-add the account.
Since I filed this bug report I have also had it happen with google talk though, and once with AIM. It happens most often with a windows live account for me, occasionally with google talk, and I haven't been able to reproduce AIM.
