I tried with Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Live AMD64 per your request. My
Toshiba L735-101 backlight keys have absolutely no visible effect,
whether or not I boot with "acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor"
So it seems it wasn't working by that time, either.
