I don't want this install issue to fall into limbo because even though
the OS rev from which I upgraded is out of support the version I was
trying to upgrade to IS still supported. In the current version U 11.04,
the file manager is broken insofar as it will not produce new thumbnails
and problems like that have been reported up to12.04. That is loss of
function. I am not sure how much Unity is responsible for that.

Also, I ought to file a bug against KDE as well, for the process to
convert a login session is very poorly designed. If I try to start as
session using KDE my screen goes black and gives me no useful
information for a long time about what it is doing to ready applications
for use by KDE. At a minimum, every *nix system I've ever used, and that
goes back to Version 7 AT&T UNIX (1979), gives some kind of stream of
output about some lengthy process. What Ubuntu is doing is more like
what Microsoft does, makes you wait forever with no information.

The failure of the upgrade, with no recovery steps other than to look
for unsupported packages through a list of about 6500 packages, the
breakage of nautalis in 11.04, and the poor design of GNOME to KDE
login, puts a bad taste in my mouth about Cononical's stewardship of
Ubuntu and makes me think more seriously about moving to another Linux,
and I will go public and vocal with my displeasure!! I worked at Su
Microsystems for 7 years from1997 to 2004 supporting Solaris and Legacy
Compilers and never saw as many screw ups as I have seen since U 9.04 to
U 11.04.repeated breakage of the file manager, x,org problems and now
the above.
