It does indeed seem to be a jack detection issue. I connected headphones to the front panel headphones socket, and sound played through both! Disconnecting resinstated the previous sound problems.
My quick and dirty hardware workaround has been to open the desktop case and detach the front panel audio connectors from the soundcard. Not a long term fix for anyone else using a Blackops X48 with SONAR/Realtek ALC885, but it's got audio working on my Ubuntu Studio installation, plus the Linux Mint and Mageia 2 installations as well.
