I could with 100% success rate before. Now what I get is a dialog coming
up and then disappearing in a split second with this spit out in the
terminal (this is in an up-to-date feisty installation):

** (gksudo:11205): WARNING **: System clock seemed to go backwards?
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Again this was by triggering gksu and then opening one of the 3 panel
menu bar menus. Is there any more information you need? Like using gdb
or something?
