Well things got increasingly weird. Desktop GUI would stop functioning if laptop was disconnected from A/C. Then just an hour ago I got stuck in an endless loop of Lightdm greeter - login screen would appear, I'd login (ubuntu, ubuntu 2d, recovery console, did not matter) and screen would go blank, then after a couple seconds the greeter login woul present itself again.
Fortunately I could from this state do Ctrl-Alt-F1 to drop to command prompt and login, which I did and removed lightdm sudo apt-get remove lightdm was informed three packages would be removed: lightdm light-GTK- greeter ubuntu-destop. I went ahead with this. Now my system seems to be working, allowing me to login through the GUI desktop. Definately seems to be a problem with lightdm which apparently came with the distro upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS. I am OK for now, but hope someone fixes this. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1070655 Title: 12.04 LTS Hangs on login To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1070655/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
