This issue has been fixed. I've tested it on an up to date version of Ubuntu 12.04 (Unity 5.16.0) and Ubuntu 12.10 (Unity 6.10.0) with mutiple different types of applications that previously caused these issues (QtOctave, SFML applications, and some x11 apps.) The launcher icon for the applications in question display the correct name and when closing said applications though the quicklist "quit" option they no longer crash unity. Also is bug: #879745 is a duplicate; I believe they both can be closed.
