I have some of these problems on Radeon HD7750 12.10 Quantal - fglrx- updates from the repository works, but not as well as 12.8 from the ATI website in 12.04 Precise which works fine (I get strange flickery effects in X-Plane Flight Sim under certain conditions in Quantal).
If I try to install drivers from ATI website (tried 12.9 beta and 12.10 final) I get no Unity. If I install fglrx from the repository (not the updates) I also get no Unity.
