This morning I tried a live CD which was very very slow and locked up on three occasions so I bit the bullet and tried a full install. I got a similar error message but this time it suggested a possible disk error was the likely cause. I must admit that was my suspicion from the error messages during the boot-up process. I will to obtain a disk test utility from the HD manufacturers and check the drive but it looks like a replacement is necessary.
