Dear Joseph. The problem in the subject has disappeared.
I regret I could not do the test that you suggested. Though I am a long date user of Ubuntu (and by no means a naive one) I do not have enough skills nor the means to perform the upstream kernel tests that you requested. Anyhow, I just upgraded to Linux kernel level 3.2.0.34 (the latest update proposed by Ubuntu's Update-Manager) and, on testing the problem in the subject, I realize that it has been fixed. Perhaps it was fixed in previous updates, since there have been a couple of major Linux upgrades since the release of Precise Pangolin but it is only today that I have managed to establish a successful wired connection via Realtek 8029. Let me thank you and, both, the Canonical and the Linux support teams for your care on these excellent open source products. Best regards. ________________________________ From: Joseph Salisbury <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, 10 September 2012, 19:41 Subject: [Bug 1048659] Re: Realtek controller stopped working after upgrade to 12.04 Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs- upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'. Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed". Thanks in advance. Command "lpsci -v" shows that the kernel driver being used is ne2k-pci. In my opinion this driver is not properly managing the RTL-8029. This is a sort of regression because the controller was working OK under many previous releases of (X)Ubuntu.
