the wiki page is saying that I need to be booted into
the latest upstream kernel before running their scripts

I assume they are asking for it to be the 3.7.0--rc7 kernel..

it won't boot into this kernel at all, so how can I proceed??

so far, the only kernel that will let me boot is 3.2.0-33
