Hi,
Apologies for the long delay in getting back to this ticket - but I have
managed to get some time
to devote wholly to this issue.
I'll provide answers to post #11 first, followed by #12.

> you have to compare the boot system log with yours to find out why
intel8x0 was not loaded
I can't determine why intel8x0 was not loaded.
If I knew what I was looking for, I would be able to figure that out.
Unfortunately I am unable
to provide you with any robust analysis in this case.
> did you disable the onboard sound in bios setup ?
No.
The onboard sound is enabled.
> can you find ck804 audio controller if you removed the hdmi card ?
Just wanting to clarify a point here, the hdmi card that you are referring to
is in fact a graphics
card with a built in hdmi port.
I removed the Radeon 5870, and the `lspci -vvv` brings up:
(complete output attached as file: lspci-no-radeon-5870.txt)
The dmesg output is attached as file: dmesg-no-radeon-5870.txt
Here is the relevant copy from the `lspci -vvv` command:
00:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: NVIDIA Corporation CK804 AC'97 Audio
Controller (rev a2)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. K8N4-E or A8N-E Mainboard
Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr-
Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx-
Status: Cap+ 66MHz+ UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- <TAbort-
<MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx-
Latency: 0 (500ns min, 1250ns max)
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 22
Region 0: I/O ports at dc00 [size=256]
Region 1: I/O ports at 1000 [size=256]
Region 2: Memory at d2003000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: snd_intel8x0
Kernel modules: snd-intel8x0
We can see from the above output that the following lines differ:
Subsystem
Region 1
Region 2
Kernel driver in use
Not sure what to make of all that.
I ran `aplay -l` and the result can be found in file:
aplay-dash-l-no-radeon-5870.txt
It seems to detect my playback devices.
== #12 ==
I am unable determine why this is happening.
I can speculate about the reasons, but I feel in this forum that it is
unwise to do so.

I'm hoping the experts in this area are able to shed some light, or provide
some
strategic direction for me to analyse further.
