Public bug reported:

I was trying a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10, and it almost completed
the installation, having a window open to restart the computer. Then an
error message like the one above came up, after which I got a choice of
partitions in which to install grub. Every one I tried came up with the
same error message, so I just had to abort the installation.
