I can confirm this on the same system "Thinkpad T61, kernel is i386, and
intel grafic". I see it since an update from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10. I
used 12.04  with tuxonice kernel (from tuxonice ppa) and did not
encounter this issue (though sleep/hibernate was never completely
stabel).   With 12.04 hibernate stopped working with tuxonice. With
standard i386 kernel hibernate works only if I do "sudo swapoff -a; sudo
swapon -a" immediately before.  I use  Ubuntu with a pretty different
configuration running kde. This should allow to exclude many error
sources including Compiz. Also I do not use Firefox. Probably it is
worth trying an older kernel.
