I've read in another forum
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1279852) that it could,
although I've never tried it. Would that possibly play a role in the
issue?

Also, something I forgot to mention is that when I plugged into the
other headphone output ("right" one), the "output device" entry in the
Sound window (from system settings) didn't react as when I plugged into
the first (left) one. The device didn't change automatically to "analog
headset" but kept displaying "Speakers - built-in audio". Dunno it that
may matter.
