It seems that I have the exact same hardware config as Steven, and I happen to 
have the exact same problem.
There is a workaround for this when using pulseaudio.
In the file 
/usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output-headphones.conf, comment 
the 2 lines below (around line 69):
[Element Speaker]
;switch = off
;volume = off

That solves the headphones muting.

Now, about the driver fix, I'm curious to know how I can do what you're
asking, Raymond.

Also, I've just realized that the subwoofer is not working.Pulseaudio only lets 
me choose analog stereo or surround 4.0.  Isn't it a related issue? 
I've tried a lot of parameters to the snd_hda_intel module, none appears to 
solve that. I don't know if I have the best driver's parameters but it looks 
like I have the same as Steven's since I have the same content for 
*_pin_configs sysfs files (I might be wrong, I don't know anything about the 
linux audio internals ; so, Steven, if you've managed to get the subwoofer 
working, I'm eager to know how!
