I can confirm this is happening for me in 12.10 3.7.0 kernel. No kernel logs
since I can't get out of the fake ata NULLs but I managed to write down a few
errors I noticed:
Warning at: /build/buildd/linux-3.7.0/drivers/ata/libata_core.c 2947
ata_timing_find_mode +0x66/0x80()
ata_timing_find_mode: unable to find timing for xfer_mode 0x0.
Unable to handle NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000010

It could be unrelated to this and more about USB devices but I'm going to try
the kernels from 3c4cfadef6a1665d9cd02a543782d03d3e6740c6 anyway.
However the 12.10 kernel 3.7.0 will boot with acpi=off but then my USB devices
are not functional such as my mouse. When acpi is on, it will stop while adding
USB devices such as my headset Roccat Kave and Ace Edge T2 and give the libata
Warnings from above before the stop.
