Hello, just tried again on 12.04, you are right, it works out of the box. 
However back in 2011, I used to connect the scanner to a (once) powerful 
adaptec SCSI card, not the one that was given with the scanner when I bought it 
eons ago. Now I connect it to that card, and everything works fine. Perhaps the 
nice adaptec card was having issues back then.
Thanks for the feedback.

By the way, do (or did) you have a decent workflow for negatives under
linux ? I used mostly reversal film , though I do have some negatives
that are yet to be archived. And this is a pain in the ... . The windows
software coming with the scanner was just doing things fine.
