Most of the above did not work for me ... HOWEVER ...
I instaled gnome-alsamixer and I can get sound from the TV card (an old bttv card) when I click on the FM device in gnome-alsamixer. But doing so is only for audio. I can bring up tvtime, but I cannot control the volume at all from tvtime or from alsamixer. to turn off autio, I have to launch gnome-alsamixer again and turn it off. PLEASE FIX THIS SOON!
