For gtk+3.0 to depend on wayland in the Ubuntu repos would require that
none of the proprietary drivers force the removal of wayland. I suppose
this could be done in such a way that wayland would be installed but
broken with the proprietary drivers installed, assuming the session and
all programs fall back to X without any issues.

This concern goes out the window if either both Nvidia and AMD start
supporting Wayland in their prop drivers, or (my preferred scenario) the
open source drivers catch up. Radeon is closing fast on Catalyst,
Nvidia's lesser cooperation compared to AMD has meant the nouveau team
has to fight tooth and nail to get performance. I'd love to see Wayland
force both AMD and Nvidia to throw up their hands and release all the
non-"digital rights management" related commands and algorithms for
their hardware so they would no longer have to write proprietary Linux
drivers at all.
