Sorry, was slightly unclear:
Blank screen on dm-crypt passphrase prompt is not resolved by unplugging and 
plugging the monitor. The blank screen persists after typing the passphrase 
though, and it seems that unplugging and plugging the screen when you have 
reached the Ubuntu login prompt resolves the issue.

  Roughly 25% of the times I boot my computer, I get a completely blank
  screen instead of the dm-crypt passphrase prompt. Typing in the
  passphrase works buts results in a blank screen when logging into ubuntu
  (or kubuntu in my case). This could be resolved by pulling the monitor
  plug and plugging it back in again (or probably by switching screens
  with CTRL-ALT-F6 /F7 as OP noted).
