Sorry, was slightly unclear: Blank screen on dm-crypt passphrase prompt is not resolved by unplugging and plugging the monitor. The blank screen persists after typing the passphrase though, and it seems that unplugging and plugging the screen when you have reached the Ubuntu login prompt resolves the issue.
** Tags added: apport-collected staging ** Description changed: Roughly 25% of the times I boot my computer, I get a completely blank screen instead of the dm-crypt passphrase prompt. Typing in the passphrase works buts results in a blank screen when logging into ubuntu (or kubuntu in my case). This could be resolved by pulling the monitor plug and plugging it back in again (or probably by switching screens with CTRL-ALT-F6 /F7 as OP noted).
