Public bug reported:

Installing thinkfan on a thinkpad still (updated 12.10, 20Dec2012) doesn't make
it work (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thinkfan/+bug/787031).
However, I think i've gone through the necessary extra steps that are supposed
to (and used to) make it work.
But now, after doing a clean install of 12.10, I get the following problem:

sudo modprobe thinkpad_acpi
FATAL: Error inserting thinkpad_acpi
(/lib/modules/3.5.0-21-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/thinkpad_acpi.ko):
Invalid argument

I expected no error and, upon reboot, I expected my fan to stop going at full
speed. Instead, thinkfan seems not to work.
