I have bought a samsung gio smartphone with android 2.3.6. I can connect to 
internet via 3g. I can also share this internet connection with my laptop on 
windows 7 (Settings > Wireless networks > Usb connection sharing) via a usb 
cable, and use internet on my laptop.
I also have Ubuntu 12.04 precise (latest updates as of now, -pae kernel) on 
this laptop. When I boot ubuntu on the laptop, the usb internet connection 
share functionality does not work. The phone is detected as a usb device, I 
also see a "Samsung Electronics Android Usb Device" under wired networks but it 
is disabled. I cannot connect to internet on my laptop through my phone.
