Having a huge black window on-screen is probably worse than hiding the window. There's some other side effects of having large pixmaps too.
This happens on all versions. Its a limitation in the way tfp was designed. Either that or ubuntu should enable the copytex plugin. Its been sitting in the source tree for a while ..
