I have now tried all the different methods I could find to upgrade the BIOS, including making a .img file and booting to it from grub. In the cases that work at all, I get the message at the DOS prompt 'Test.' It appears that the .exe file has been nerfed so it will only work 'properly' under Windows (as opposed to FreeDOS), unless there are some other command parameters to enter when executing the file.
