I had got the error ("error: no video mode activated." message) after
upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04. I have purged grub configuration and
error has dissapeared.
These are the magic commands (use carefully when installing grub on
partitions, internet connection required):
sudo apt-get purge grub grub-pc grub-common
sudo apt-get install grub-common grub-pc
