@Joseph: by email, Maté told me that the problem only occurs with the default
GRUB entry ('Ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-34-generic-pae'). He said that the
Recovery and the previous kernels don't have this bug.
His BootInfo log : http://paste.ubuntu.com/1425840/
@Maté: please test the latest Mainline Kernel this way:
1) boot your installed Ubuntu (via an old kernel)
2) go to http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8-rc1-raring/ , and
download the three *i386.deb packages and the *all.deb package.
3) install these 4 packages (this may require to follow a specific order)
4) reboot your pc. The default entry should now be 'Ubuntu, with Linux 3.8
...'. Select it, and tell us if you can access Ubuntu normally with it or not?
(if not, please describe what you observe)
