I also wondered about it for a long time, and a friend of mine solved the mystery for me: The OS itself is OK, but some desktop applications don't work well in a 64-bit environment. The most notable example is the Flash plugin. There are few others that i can't recall now. The 64-bit is OK for a server with a large memory.
