This looks similar to bug 785006, but you used Ubuntu 11.10, which I
wouldn't have expected to hit this issue.

Can you try deleting the duplicity-full.20120820T030834Z.vol1.difftar
file?  (The one without the .gz at the end!)  Do that and try to restore
again.  Let me know if that improves matters.

Still not sure how you ended up in this situation though.
