I actually upgraded a computer two weeks ago from Ubuntu 10.10 using update-manager so I'm pretty sure it works. The supported path requires you to update to 11.04 and then to 11.10 and finally to 12.04 LTS.
Even though 11.04 is no longer supported either, it's ok.
