I did not change the firmware of my Modem for a long time.
On internet exists some unlocked firmewares, but I did not find a
offical last build...

After installation of Ubuntu12.04 sakis3g connects without any
problems. I need not to edit or change something. I would expect
the same from network manager and it proves it is possible...

Network Manager:
After power on the Mobile Broadband is not listed in Network
Manager. Steps to solve (Ubuntu 12.04) :

1) Check Modem is detected by USB

    lsusb

    Bus 001 Device 002: ID 12d1:1003 Huawei

2) Check loaded kernel modules:

    lsmod | grep usb

    usb_wwan 19779 1 option
    usbserial 37173 2 option,usb_wwan
    usbhid 41906 0
    btusb 17912 2
    hid 77367 3 hid_uclogic,hid_microsoft,usbhid
    bluetooth 158438 23 rfcomm,bnep,btusb
    usb_storage 39646 0

3) Remove usb-storage

    sudo rmmod usb-storage

4) modprobe kernel module usbserial

    sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=12d1 product=1003

Now the entries (Mobile Broadband) is listed in Network Manger
and works as expected (= I can connect).
