You can make the trashcan visible on the desktop by running:
gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.desktop trash-icon-visible true

In a gnome-fallback session, the trashcan icon may be added to the panel by
ALT + right click on the panel -> "add to panel..." -> select the trashcan
(see http://askubuntu.com/questions/58172/how-to-revert-to-gnome-classic)
