I have a Fujitsu lifebook (P771) running Ubuntu 12.10, and did not experience any problems when inserting en extra battery. The new battery was indicated as empty for quite a long time though (hence my browsing this bug and several others), but after being plugged in for a few hours it now seems to be charging as expected.
