My apologies for not keeping the thread up to date. I reinstalled ubuntu from scratch and could not replicate the issue since then, so I did not perform the suggested troubleshooting steps.
I updated everything after installing ubuntu, including the kernel, so the latest upstream kernel might have resolved the issue.
