I tried running libreoffice from a terminal in case any diagnostics appeared when it failed. Calc still failed after about ten minutes of operation but nothing appeared in the terminal when it failed.
I do get the following messages on libreoffice startup but I guess these are not related to the problem here: javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment!
