If the battery doesn't drain when outside of the laptop, anther thing to
test would be to ensure the system is really powered off and not in some
hybernated/suspended state.   Shutdown the laptop, then pull the battery
and re-insert it.  That way you confirm the OS isn't in some sort of
suspend or hibernated state.  If the battery drain stops after this
action, then it may be a kernel issue.
