Public bug reported:
I have Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit that I got off the ubuntu.com main site (more
info below).
I have been trying to get Ubuntu 12.10 working on my computer, but have
run into nothing but problems. (I need a Linux system to work in konsole
with my university if I want to work at home as opposed to working at
the school, and Ubuntu seems the most desirable, as well, I may
eventually phase out windows if my experiences with Ubuntu become good)
There are 2 main kind of windows that I've noticed. sometimes the top
bar of the window appears in grey, with the close/fullscreen/minimize
options in the top right corner, or those might appear as colored
bubbles in the top left corner of the window. If the window is grey, it
will almost never work. at all. the mouse will not be able to click on
anything in the window, or close the window, or do anything with it. it
just freezes. but the computer doesn't. I can still open new windows,
and use the navbar on the left side of the screen. usually. not always.
I've had the topbar not work as well, so I can't log out, or access the
network options. I tried downloading, burning, and installing a new
Ubuntu disk, and it was even more buggy (cuz the first I had stopped
working, it would just freeze in "install Ubuntu" when the button is
next to "try Ubuntu") things like the topbar not working again, so I
couldn't connect to the internet, then when I was trying to partition
the SSD, when a window popped up to create a new partition, I could see
the window, but when I clicked, it clicked on things behind the window.
it was all just being very odd and buggy.
I'd very much like to get Ubuntu working, it has been a long and
gruelling quest to do so, from everywhere I hear, it's the best Linux
and I'm amazed I haven't just forgotten the idea. (I actually gave up a
few times then kept deciding to try again because I really want to use
Ubuntu) but I feel like one of those people that don't know technology,
that talks like they do, but really ther just idiots and pains in the
neck to customer service. *facewall*
Other system info:
-10GB Ubuntu partition, with 5GB partition for Swap, remainder reserved for
windows cuz windows is a bitch for space *facedesk*
P8 Z77-V_LX
-core i5 3570K
-16GB DDR3 1600MHz
-no dedicated graphics (yet)
-primary hard drive: Patriot Pyro 120GB SSD - Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit, Legit
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
-other hard drive, a WD 1TB Caviar Black- hacked Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit,
and failed attempt at windows Ubuntu installer (tries to install but freezes
hard on 'copying files' everytime... it's ok, I don't want it booted off the
hard drive anyway.)
Method taken to install Ubuntu: Got the isos for windows and Ubuntu (got
the iso for Ubuntu right from the official website) burned onto disks,
installed Ubuntu, created the partitions, installed Windows, then
reinstalled Ubuntu to let it know that it's boss. (went to "something
else" deleted the old partition and recreated it, and installed it on
the new partition)
there is no difficulty getting Ubuntu to boot, and these problems did
not arise immediately. I had about 2 days of glory thinking I finally
had a fully functional dual-boot. Windows works perfectly though, not a
single problem with it, so I know my stuff isn't broken.
I don't know the answers to steps 1 and 2 below, but I just got my copy
by going to www.ubuntu.com, clicking on "get Ubuntu 12.10", clicking
Ubuntu desktop, clicking 12.10 64-bit, "not now, take me to the
download" cuz I'm a cheap, poor bastard university student type, opened
the file that automatically starts downloading, and buringing that disk
image to a DVD-RW (memorex single layer, if that makes any difference)
