I am also annoyed by this behaviour. While I accept it is not a bug, just saying that it is the same behaviour for other clients is, imo, disingenuous. Does empathy not want to be *better* than other clients at all?
It seems clear to me from personal experience, and from others' comments, that this behaviour gives a quite poor user experience. As such, it would be good if it could be improved. I could imagine, for example, that a feature could be added to run a set of commands for each channel, so that you can add '/ignore nickserv' ...or perhaps it is already fixed/workedaround somehow?
