I am using Ubuntu 6.06 LTS with all the bug fixes. The evolution
package has version 2.6.1-0ubuntu7, but this bug occurred in previous
versions as well.

I didn't emphasize the importance of this bug previously. As contacts
don't immediately appear, one has a tendency to create duplicate
contacts. Also, at least in my case, I usually add a contact
immediately prior to writing to, calling, etc. that contact. So, if
they don't appear, then I can't do any of that, which makes it useless
to add a contact. Finally, I am not sure how this will affect
synchronization with an organizer (which I do, but haven't followed
closely enough to tell what the effect is).
