Maybe I understood it wrongly, but I had to add jme.ko to /path/to/usb/stick/install/initrd.gz rather than .../install/netboot/ubuntu_installer/.../initrd.gz.
Anyway, the workaround worked for me. But it is a tedious task that not everybody is able to do. I've had to do the patch since Ubuntu 11.04. This is four Ubuntu versions up to now.
