An update. Was it me? Was it an update? I will never know. I have been able to get Synaptic, Add/Remove, and Network Manager working again. Remember, some of these problems are my own doing.
There were interim problems with OpenOffice (not my doing) and Compiz (not clear who is at fault) but each update (I do several a day) seems to make more progress.
