okay, tried two kernels:

linux-image-3.7.0-030700rc2-generic
and
linux-image-3.8.0-030800rc4-generic  this one was for "raring", had to launch 
in graphics safe mode

Both kernels exhibited in kern.log :

Jan 22 18:38:19 future kernel: [  112.165839] mmc0: error -110 whilst 
initialising SD card
Jan 22 18:38:19 future kernel: [  112.476128] sdhci: Switching to 1.8V 
signalling voltage failed, retrying with S18R set to 0

So the issue persists even in the upstream.
