the mcelog package currently available for edgy is 0.7-1. this version
is too old to decode MCE's for common modern CPU's such as the Xeon's
i'm using.

I assume it's Core2. If you use mcelog 0.8pre with --core2 it will know how
to decode it.
Besides the tables are in the IA32 Architecture Software Developer's Manual
Vol 3A and possibly more detailed in your internal data sheets.
