Okay, I've installed linux-image-3.2.0-37 package and booted into that kernel. What used to work with that kernel in 12.04 is now broken in 12.10 and 13.04. So the problem is not the kernel. See attached 3.2.0-kernel.log which confirms that USB devices are attached with no error messages. It may be Ubuntu's tempering with Nautilus or other components of the system. I would really appretiate it if someone could reproduce this bug on their system to help us hunting it down.
